A Master Builder Who Still Prefers the Site to the Boardroom!

Hello, I’m Ray, the owner & Founder of RCL Builders and Loft Conversion Specialists.

With over 35 years of experience in the building trade, I’ve had the privilege of delivering a wide range of projects across the city and region, from loft conversions and residential renovations to commercial developments and HMO projects

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that every project is personal. Whether it’s creating more space with a loft conversion, extending a family home, or tackling a full renovation, I treat every job as if it were my own property.

A little fun fact about me: when I was younger, I dreamed of becoming a pilot. Unfortunately, there was just one problem—I was terrified of heights!

A Liverpool Legacy - From Boxing Roots to Building Dreams!

Liverpool has always been my home. I was born and raised here along with my brother Darren and sister Cheryl, and after all these years, there’s still nowhere else I’d rather live or work.

Not everyone knows this, but I come from a family with deep roots in Liverpool. In fact, I’m the son of one of the city’s most celebrated boxers, my namesake Ray Ako!

My dad was born in Liverpool on 26th February 1945, he established himself as one of the city’s most popular and respected professional boxers. Competing in 13 professional contests, he recorded 10 victories, earning a reputation as a talented and exciting fighter.

The majority of my dads bouts took place at The Liverpool Stadium, where he became a firm favourite among local fans. His most dangerous weapon was his powerful right hand, whether delivered as a cross or an uppercut. That punching power proved decisive throughout his career, accounting for half of his victories by knockout, and helping him to secure the Area Cruiserweight Championship twice! 

Boxing is a strong family tradition, my uncle Steve Ako, was also a boxer fighting out of  Liverpool, and my nephew Ben has since carried on the proud family legacy. 

Outside the ring, dad was well known as the owner and operator of the famous Blue Angel Club, renowned for its connection to The Beatles. He also built a gym behind his home, where he devoted time to training youngsters from the local community. His commitment to helping others earned him great respect both within boxing circles and across Liverpool.

My dad bravely battled Crohn’s disease for many years before sadly passing away on 2nd January 1984 at the age of 39.

Remembered as both a skilled boxer and a valued community figure, he left a lasting legacy in the city.

Today, his portrait proudly hangs in The Liverpool Museum, side by side with fellow boxing great Tom Conteh, an enduring testament to his lasting impact on the city and the sport.
